Exploring the Range of Possible Bodily Responses
with Marin Shamov
Saturday, 24 October, 15:00–17:15
Through a series of reflective and relational exercises, based on performative and somatic practices, the workshop creates a playful frame in which the body can try, observe, recognize, choose, clarify, or change its mind. It focuses on expanding our range of possible bodily responses in different kinds of interactions. These responses can take the form of movement, voice, negotiating boundaries, choosing whether or not to speak or act. Participants practise paying attention to what emerges, exploring how they might respond differently in relation to others, and discovering something else about themselves through the process. The workshop addresses external and internalised expectations of how we are supposed to move, behave, speak, and occupy space.
Location: Vienna’s 1st district. The exact location will be shared with registered participants before the workshop.
The workshop is open to everyone upon prior registration. It involves moving through space, interacting with other participants, and working in pairs and groups. Please bring comfortable indoor shoes (or socks) and clothing that allows you to move in the way you choose.
Marin Shamov (1990, Sebezh) is a performance, dance, and visual artist. They work with performative and somatic approaches in relation to experiences of queer and trans activism, migration, awareness work in public spaces, psychoanalysis and pedagogy. Their recent work addresses topics such as access to mother*hood for trans* and non-binary people; queer migrant community living and the knowledge that emerges from shared experience and cohabitation; and performative practices in spaces we share with others: modes of awareness and risk.
They hold a diploma in Dance Pedagogy and an M.A. in Choreography (Saint Petersburg). They completed exchange programmes at LUCA School of Arts (Ghent) and Oslo National Academy of the Arts, and are currently completing an M.A. at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Performative Arts class. Recipient of Dance Web Scholarship 2024.
Embodied Memories: site-specific walk and group practice
with Leo Braverman
Friday, 30 October, 13:00–15:30 (with a break)
Hi, my name is Leo! I'm a researcher and artist. Being inspired by the space where I spend my recent everydayness, I invite you to the performative workshop, which explores collective (and imagined) memories alongside emotions and physicality of our individual bodies.
The first part of Embodied Memories is a site-specific walk through Otto Wagner Areal — a (re)covered site of Nazi crimes. By means of performance, we explore historical and sensory entanglements of contemporary life within the memorial landscape.
We will walk to the pavilion of Kollektiv Kaorle, where we have a break before the second part. By charging space through somatic and theatrical exercises, we will create a performative environment to explore how memories and imaginaries affect our bodies and emotions, and how creative production of space may foster expression of affect and change.
Location: Otto Wagner Areal, followed by the pavilion of Kollektiv Kaorle. The exact location and recommendations on how to prepare for the walk will be sent a week before the event.
Note on participation: This event welcomes active participation but leaves it fully voluntary and open, as it deals with sensitive topics, such as memories and emotions. Please feel free (not) to participate, (not) to engage, or (not) to observe, in whatever way feels right for you.
still / live — inner criticism
collective drawing practice with ellie polishchuk
sunday,
1 november, 16:00–18:00 (with a break)
sometimes we do not see others in the same critical way that we see ourselves. through drawing together, we will explore how insecurity, self-criticism, boundaries, and empathy can move between people and their creative practices.
this workshop is inspired by art therapy approaches, where we can find some space to explore our emotions and inner conflicts. we will use drawing as a way to make feelings visible, shift perspectives, and create a space where something initially perceived as negative or uncomfortable can become shared and transformed.
the workshop is facilitated by ellie polishchuk, a visual anthropologist and researcher who creates at the intersection of art and anthropology, exploring personal plasticity, temporal narratives, and the ways realities are observed, mediated, and constructed.
i will be happy to guide you through this practice, opening a space for empathy and non-judgement towards ourselves and our work.
the second part of the practice will be dedicated to drawing one another in a short sketching session. this is planned as part of the practice, but i understand that it may feel challenging or uncomfortable. please listen to yourself and leave at any point if necessary. i still hope we can go through this journey together.
we will have time afterwards to mingle and enjoy a drink together.
location: baumgartner höhe 1, kollektiv kaorle. i will send you more details before the workshop.
